Creative & Research BiographyRealizing the difference between teaching art projects and teaching for artistic literacy was a key turning point in my professional development. This is when I began my rampage against cookie cutter project-based activities to teaching for true artistic literacy. What a difference this has made not only in my teaching but also in the joy for and quality of creative work.
At the beginning I had no answers but I was definitely on a mission to find some. I focused my research on art teaching approaches that could lead to the greatest improvements in both learning and creating: art therapy, interdisciplinary projects, service learning, open studio, and more. The answer I found was not in a single approach; the answer was to learn more about artists individually, their learning styles, and diverse teaching styles that help meet their array of learning needs. Therefore, I enrolled in the Master of Science Teaching and Learning program at MSU, Mankato with an emphasis on Curriculum and Assessment Writing. My thesis, Improving Students’ Artistic Efficacy: Studio Production versus Multi-faceted Art Curriculum, proved invaluable in my professional goal of teaching to make a difference. Today, with my second masters degree, Master of Arts in Art Education from UF, Gainesville, I still focus on my professional mission of positively affecting as many people as one art educator possibly can. Continuing to be a determined and dedicated teacher, professor, or studio facilitator of art education is the avenue with which I am achieving ultimate success with this goal. |
